toonser – noun: urbanite, town dweller

Awa an wash yersel, ya toonser mink. Away and wash yourself you dirty town dweller.

Notes: Once considered poor, dirty and uncouth people, toonsers have become some of the wealthiest and most highly-skilled people in the country due to the huge expansion of the local oil industry. Today most toonsers could buy most teuchters if they desired.

The word toonser comes from the Doric word for ‘town’ which is toon.

Marriages between toonsers and teuchters are now permitted by Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire councils, although no couples have yet openly taken advantage of this change in law.

Anyone living in a hamlet, village, town or city will be considered a toonser by a teuchter who lives in a slightly smaller settlement.
