dreich – adjective: cold, wet and dull (weather)

It’s affa dreich the day. It’s cold, wet and dull today.

Note: People from the North East of Scotland paradoxically find huge amounts of pleasure from feeling despondent about the things around them, although this joy can never be expressed verbally or non-verbally. Doric speakers enjoy reminding each other that the weather is dreich and aim to mention this as quickly into a conversation as possible. In addition to bemoaning about the weather, Doric aborigines also enjoy reminding themselves about the perceived unsatisfactory nature of football, roads, children, the cost-of-living, and life generally.
